April 3, 1882: Jesse James is assassinated.
Before his death, Jesse James was the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang, which had its roots as a Confederate guerrilla group. In 1876, the gang dissolved after a failed robbery, whereupon James was left only with brothers Charles and Robert Ford in his gang.
Unbeknownst to him, Robert Ford had secretly conducted bargains with authorities and was promised $5,000 for the capture or killing of the outlaw. On April 3, Robert shot James in a strangely specific way, if The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is to be believed. To the Ford brothers’ dismay, they were charged with first degree murder and were forced to flee the state after receiving a portion of their award. Two years later, Charles Ford committed suicide; eight years after that, Robert Ford himself was murdered. James, however, became a celebrated (albeit controversial) figure, particularly in the South.
